Work Horse & Modes of Transportation

Love at first sight.  New work by Dana Hart-Stone.  If you are in San Fran-
cisco go see his work in person at Brian Gross Fine Arts and experience it
up close.  Dana started collecting polaroids years ago and has been creating
this amazing body of work, a tapestry-like collage of found images trans-
ferred onto canvas.

How ironic that I would choose the 2 pictured above titled;

Work Horse, 2011; acrylic on canvas; 60 × 48 inches
Modes of Transportation, 2011; acrylic on canvas; 60 × 48 inches

Pulp Fashion/"Papiers à la Mode”

What a mesmerizing show this was! I was lucky to catch Belgian artist, Isabelle de Borchgrave's exhibition in San Francisco's Legion of Honor. Isabelle works entirely with PAPER - yes PAPER. Exquisite, textural and historical costumes manipulated from paper in many ways imaginable... pleating, crumpling, braiding, twisting, painting...

Over 15 years she has created original works of art "Papiers à la Mode” spanning 300 years of fashion from Elizabeth I to Coco Chanel.

In particular, I was amazed by her imaginative use of corrugated cardboard-sections transformed into a lacy Elizabethan collar.

French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has built an aviary orchestra at the Curve (Barbican Gallery; Silk Street; 44-20-7638-4141; www.barbican.org.uk) His site-specific installation for The Curve takes the form of a walk-though aviary for a flock of zebra finches. The space is furnished with electric guitars, bass, and cymbals that are set up alongside amplifiers. Seeds and water are sprinkled all over the instruments and instead of musicians, there are 40 zebra finches. As the birds go about their routine activities, perching on or feeding from the various pieces of equipment, they create a captivating, live, spontaneous soundscape.

Stop tweeting and go check out the chicks. The show runs through May 23.
