California Modern

I love California.  Always have, always will.  But I'm a bit biased...I call both Northern and
Southern CA my home for over 24 years.  I travel often but always happy to come home to
CA.

"California Design, 1930-1965: Living In a Modern Way" part of the Getty initiative "Pacific
Standard Time" celebrating art and design in Southern CA from the 1930s - 1960s through-
out LA, captures a moment of this CA spirit.  Its the largest show of its kind, featuring 350+
examples of CA design...not to be missed, including the fabrication of the Eames house.

Chariots on Fire Pop up Shop at Tortoise!

Pictured above is a priceless moment of a young girl interacting with the design of an On za Line
necklace, which, in her opinion works just as well as a tiara! Kids are truly amazing in their pure
observations of the world... a reminder to us all, stay curious, examine the world with uninhibited
eyes... you may be surprised by what you really see. Her mother also purchased an earring her
daughter picked out from our collection, as she wanted to regift it to her daughter when she grew
older - a truly humbling moment.

Thank you to all who came out to celebrate Chariots on Fire's opening reception at tortoise. What a
grand evening it was of familiar and new faces. Not to mention that 15 minutes to closing, Some-
thing Happen!!!
the power went out on all of Abbot Kinney Blvd. Magically, people stayed and
continued their conversations and enjoyed each other's company in complete darkness... what
a magical evening!

Special thanks to Aya Muto for sending us photos of the event, the tortoise team, neil for baking
pizzettas, Natalie for bringing wine all the way from Napa, TYD team for offering extra hands,
Lyndsay for picking up flowers, Shoji for helping me color displays, Taku san for helping design
and construct the display and to Keiko and Taku san for inviting us into their shop!

Very special thanks to Shoji Morinaga for helping us color our display. Shoji is the Japanese artist who also showcased his beautifully hand crafted wood bowls at Tortoise. He has spent the last month in Joshua tree crafting some of his new collection of wood bowls at the studio of the sculptor, Alma Allen.
