THE SCULPTURAL NARRATIVE
“Wakusei — literally ‘wandering star,’ the Japanese word for planet — evokes the movement and mystery of celestial bodies. From his atelier in Japan’s lush hillsides, Tenshin Juba works in rhythm with nature, creating forms through ash glaze, clay, stone, and fire. Each Matchawan object reflects the friction between earth and sky, feeling both ancient and newly discovered.
Juba’s practice is deeply connected to his environment. He uses materials drawn from the land, including rocks, fertile clay, fallen trees, and other organic matter. Rooted in a terrain he has known since childhood, his work combines familiarity with experimentation.
Fire is central to Juba’s process. By subjecting his work to extreme temperatures reaching 2336°F / 1280°C, he creates dramatic changes in surface and form. Over roughly seven days of firing, the work develops a range of tactile effects, from glassy pools of silica and polished metallic tones to rugged surface variations achieved through the ichi-haze, or ‘stone-burst,’ technique.
