ARTIST RUGS
Inspired by Makoto Kagoshima’s joyful botanical world, this collaboration with Chariots on Fire and Christopher Farr translates expressive ceramic imagery into one-of-a-kind rugs with painterly texture and collectible presence. Selected ceramics from the Chariots on Fire archive guided the design process, creating a dialogue between scale, surface, and textile form.

“Based on Japan’s southern island of Kyushu, Makoto Kagoshima is revered around the globe for his exquisite ceramics that feature hand-drawn botanical forms. In his work, bulbous blooms and leafy vines float freely in a carefully orchestrated compilation that the artist adorns with painted bursts of color and unique textures.
Now, those striking ceramic forms are being translated into textiles thanks to a collabo-ration with rug maker Christopher Farr and Venice, California, art and design gallery Chariots on Fire, which first brought Kagoshima’s work to the United States.”

“Each Rug is made in Afghanistan, a country renowned for its historic carpet making skills and woven idiosyncratic nuances; a result of the high lanolin (oil) content of the Ghazni wool and the slow hand dying and spinning of the wool within the process. These unique handcrafted details add a distinctive movement of color, known as an abrash, that is sympathetic to Kagoshima's own vocabulary.”
