From his atelier in Japan’s lush hillsides, Tenshin Juba works in rhythm with nature, creating commanding, abstract forms through ash glaze, clay, feldspar, and fire. Each hand-sculpted piece reflects the profound friction between earth and sky, feeling both ancient and newly discovered.
Juba’s practice is deeply connected to his environment, utilizing local clay and traditional wood-fired techniques to achieve remarkable structural scale. His work involves a punishing seven-day firing process at 2336°F (1280°C), orchestrating an elemental metamorphosis of earthen minerals that yields rich, fluid surfaces, glassy pools of silica, and an icy, high-gloss luster contrasted by the rugged textures of the traditional ‘ichi-haze’ technique.
