Exclusively presented by Chariots on Fire, Indigo Joshua Tree Flower is a rare, one-of-a-kind ceramic work born directly from Makoto Kagoshima's creative journeys across California. Brought by the Chariots on Fire team to Joshua Tree as an artist retreat for inspiration, Kagoshima was deeply moved by the desert landscape and its unique flora—giving rise to this evocative piece.
Rendered in rich indigo tones using his signature sgraffito line work, the composition captures the raw, architectural spirit of the California high desert. Beyond its primary face, this work carries exceptional collector provenance as a double-sided original, featuring a custom hand-drawn illustration and signature on the verso.
The Invitation That Launched Everything
In 2010, one earth-toned floral plate captivated art director Ritsuko Yagi—sparking an invitation and a spontaneous trip to Makoto Kagoshima’s Fukuoka atelier. There, she asked him directly: Would you present your first U.S. solo exhibition at my gallery Chariots on Fire in Venice, California, commissioned by me? He answered with a resounding yes—initiating what would become a 17-year studio legacy.
That partnership gave rise to our Makoto Kagoshima: Ceramics book, designed and published by Chariots on Fire as an intimate archive of our curated selection from his largest collection to date at the time of publication. Across 11 commissioned exhibitions (2013–2021), this historic collaboration expanded offsite in 2021 with the dual exhibition launch of the Makoto Kagoshima × Chariots on Fire × Christopher Farr rug collection, followed directly by the joint textile and wallpaper release, with the next edition arriving in 2027.
“What I create for Chariots embodies Los Angeles,” says Kagoshima. The gallerist who discovered his work and brought him to Los Angeles for his first U.S. exhibition proudly carries that provenance forward—placing this piece at the very heart of his origin story with Chariots on Fire.
The Evolution of Form: The painterly botanical lines of our fine ceramic collections extend beyond the kiln. Our ongoing collaboration with premier rug maker Christopher Farr translates Makoto Kagoshima's signature sgraffito illustrations into large-scale, 1/1 hand-knotted textiles woven from raw Afghan Ghazni wool.
