Planet Wakusei is a collection of works by alchemist potter, Tenshin Juba, whose atelier located in the lush hillside of Japan serves as a sanctuary for Juba to work in rhythm with the cycles of nature.
Juba's artistic approach demonstrates a profound connection with his environment — from the bounty of the earth, he utilizes a mix of raw materials from rocks, fertile clay, fallen trees and other organic matter. It is terrain Juba has explored since childhood, a familiar place that also ignites his desire to experiment.
Also central to Juba’s practice is his fascination with the natural element of fire. By subjecting his work to extreme temperatures peaking at 2336°F / 1280°C, Juba orchestrates a metamorphosis of earthen minerals inherent in his works. The firing process which spans roughly seven days unveils a spectrum of tactile textures from glassy pools of silica, polished metallic hues in inky black, nude and platinum to the rugged emergence of rocks from the surfaces achieved through the ichi-haze “stone-burst” technique.
Planet Wakusei bears the imprint of the artist's hand and nature’s artistry, rendering forms unrecognizable yet undeniably alive. Works are intended to live amongst us and are a celebration of the natural world.
