“Alchemist-potter Tenshin Juba creates modern earthenware and stoneware from his home-studio in Kobe, Japan, letting the raw sourcing of his materials remain dictated by the natural cycles of his landscape. This striking pair of Kobe Magnolia Petals balances pure kinetic gestures with intricate, low-tech surface treatments, designed to bring art and utility to the intimate spaces of the modern home. To achieve their dense, saturated tones, organic materials like rice straws and chestnut husks are combined in the firing process to catalyze rich, deeply texturized finishes characterized by caramelized bronze hues and brilliant metallic sheen.
Juba’s practice is deeply connected to his environment, utilizing local clay, stones, and wood-fired techniques. His work involves a seven-day firing process at 2336°F (1280°C), orchestrating an elemental metamorphosis of earthen minerals that yields rich, fluid surfaces, glassy pools of silica, and polished metallic tones. Fully vitrified and completely food-safe, this delicate duo serves beautifully as a salt, spice, or condiment dish arrangement on the dining table.
