LION HOLDING FLOWER
5” x 4”
Medium: Stoneware, Glaze
Edition: Unique
Provenance: Artist, Chariots on Fire

This one-of-a-kind ceramic small oval dish by Makoto Kagoshima is exclusive to Chariots on Fire in Venice, California. The lion holding a flower has a vivid, whimsical presence that feels playful, collectible, and immediately distinctive.

“What I create for Chariots embodies Los Angeles,” says Kagoshima. The gallerist who discovered his work and brought him to Los Angeles for his first U.S. exhibition proudly carries that provenance forward, placing this piece at the heart of his origin story with Chariots on Fire.

The Invitation That Launched EverythingIn 2010, one floral plate caught the attention of art director Ritsuko Yagi and led to a spontaneous visit to Makoto Kagoshima’s Fukuoka atelier. That encounter led to his first U.S. solo exhibition at Chariots on Fire and began a long collaboration that helped introduce his ceramics to Los Angeles collectors. Chariots on Fire later published the Makoto Kagoshima Ceramics book as an intimate archive of the work curated over time.

11 commissioned exhibitions, carefully selected and uniquely presented, each with its own story. From 2013 through 2022, these projects helped deepen the collaboration, including the offsite dual exhibition that coincided with the launch of the Makoto Kagoshima × Chariots on Fire × Christopher Farr rug collection. That success led directly to the textile and wallpaper collection, with the next iteration arriving in 2027.
