THE SCULPTURAL NARRATIVE
“Alchemist-potter Tenshin Juba creates modern earthenware and stoneware in a highly rhythmic manner from his home-studio in the quiet mountainside of Kobe, Japan, letting the raw sourcing of his materials remain dictated by the natural cycles of his landscape. This Large Sedona Plate showcases a deep, complex sienna palette that evokes the ancient warmth of desert topographies, anchored by a subtle, fluid freehand brush gesture at its center. Tenshin gathers natural raw materials from his immediate terrain—including chestnut husks and mineral-rich rocks—turning them into custom liquid glazes that react dynamically to the unyielding element of fire.
By subjecting his hand-sculpted works to extreme conditions inside the kiln across roughly seven days, Juba orchestrates an elemental metamorphosis of the clay body, yielding an extraordinary depth of earthy color. Fully vitrified and completely food-safe, its broad 9 3/4-inch surface serves effortlessly as an artisanal platter for tablescapes or individual course presentation. When unadorned, its rich, multi-tonal sienna surface and central markings allow it to function as a powerful decorative artwork. Placed independently on a central console, low dining table, or nested within a minimalist niche, it bridges everyday lifestyle utility with high-art presence.
— The Sedona Large Sienna Clay Plate brings a versatile, dual-purpose presence suitable for both culinary use and design display. For more on the artist's studio practice, read the full story in the Chariots on Fire Journal.”
